300/300 word limit. Must contain "The moon is full."
The moon is full. It reflects off the snow-covered ground making everything bright.
I keep to the trees. I’m decked from head to toe in black dyneema. It offers little protection, but I’ll take what I can get. Only my cobalt eyes are visible – a family trait.
I scale the cliff and edge my way to the small ledge.
My twin, karambit knives are holstered to my thighs; the silver blades dipped in powdered Wolfbane. I don’t plan on getting close. Close quarters with a Lycan is asking for trouble. One bite and the venom will stop my blood clotting. If that doesn’t get me, the bacteria will. It’s a lethal cocktail. Designed to cause maximum damage. It’s better to practice patience and put them down with mercury tipped bullets.
On the horizon, I see him. A monstrous, black beast standing tall on two legs.
He howls. He knows I’m here, but the scent trail I set earlier distracts and temporarily confuses him.
I’m in place, lying low, watching him through the rifles’ sight. I exhale and squeeze the trigger. A single shot.
It hits, burying itself in his shoulder.
He knows where I am now and is running at a frightening pace. The bullet hasn't slowed him down. Yet.
I exhale again and pull the trigger.
I miss.
“Shit,” I breathe.
He arrives at the crag and begins to ascend.
I retreat to the cave. The entrance too narrow for him to follow.
Dawn is almost here. If I can hold him off a little longer, I’ll survive. The mercury will kick in soon.
I slice at him with my blades.
The sun begins to crest. It’s rays hitting his fur, calling it back to skin.
He collapses forward.
I catch him, “I got you brother. You’re safe now.”
