Fluffy (Poem)
Favorite childhood toy?
A stuffed pug dog, about three inches long,
With a disproportionately large head,
Bulging eyes half closed
And one tiny paw folded over his chest
Like an Italian opera singer.
(No idea how I knew that at six years old…)
Fluffy, I named him, straight outta
McDonald's Happy Meal.
He began my collection of mini The Dogs.
(Artlist International—
does anyone remember
those "fisheye lens" pups?
All the rage in 2004.)
I fell in love with pugs when I met Fluffy.
I learned how to draw them
By copying his wrinkles and eyebrows.
He's now vintage—yes, I still own him.
Soft fur matted over,
Faux leather nose peeled off,
Tush tag frayed away,
Washed at least twice,
Lovingly, by hand,
When I barfed on him.
Twenty years, seven states, lots of changes;
He's still here, dozing on a carpet sample
on my shelf,
Reminding me of the child within.

Prompt: a poem about a favorite childhood toy
