The Reason
One blinding May morning, scarlet poppies waved. The soldier walked a line of white markers, a satchel of American flags on his back, staking one at each anonymous memorial to a fallen comrade.
Memories whispered mockingly in his ears: his mom crying. His dad's funeral. Mournful taps. What's the point? Why am I following in his footsteps?
He straightened, every post now adorned with a fluttering flag. A mother approached, pushing her child in a stroller.
"Thank you for protecting us."
Her gratitude renewed his resolve, echoing the clarion call to preserve and defend his people, no matter the cost.
Words: 100.
Written for the May 2025 Bard's Hall,
