I stood on her parents' doorstep, adjusting my shirt collar, shuffling my feet. Finally, I activated the Ring doorbell.

“Hello?”

“May I visit Evelyn, please?”

“She's not home.”

A lie. I saw Evelyn peeking from her upstairs window as I approached.

“When can I see her?”

“She’s out of town.”

I paced behind the sidewalk hedge. Why was she hiding from me?

Evelyn appeared at the door, holding hands with another boy. She smiled, laughed, skipping along.

She'd never been never happy with me. Though it hurt, I knew this was better. I was only visiting to break up, anyway.
