Forked Path
Two people walked side by side one morning, a slow, easy gait. They started out by the sea, where waves lapped sand dunes and grasses rippled like water. Soft sand turned to packed soil, tracing the lazy river’s meandering path.
The river grew narrower, rougher, faster as they went upstream. The dirt path became slippery rocks. The two supported each other, climbing past waterfalls and inching along cliff sides.
By sunset, they reached a fork in the road. Facing separate paths, the two paused, saying farewell. Some day they'd meet again, continuing a shared journey. For now, they walked alone.
