Freedom
That morning she shuffled, shackled as usual, seeking sunshine in the overcrowded courtyard. Elbowing past several other prisoners, she sank into a bench, staring through chain-link fencing at wastelands beyond.
A blackbird fluttered up to rest on the barbed wire fringe. She tensed, watching the rarity. It tipped its head back, warbling out a few sparkling notes. Then it lifted a wing, preening feathers with its beak.
It turned, examining her with one eye. She remained still. It spread its wings, flashing red spots, taking off.
“Fly free,” she whispered. The blackbird faded into distant blue-gray horizon. Its memory lingered.
