To Hear and to See
Choose a sense, they said—
How can I pick just one?
I need them all to survive—
At least that's how it seems.
I know others can thrive without sight or hearing;
I cannot conceive of that, myself.
Sight is precious:
Pages of words, ocean waves, roses, daisies,
Mountains, trees, birds, smiling faces—
Flies in my food
Hearing is also indispensable:
Voices, expressions, nuances, laughter,
Infinite tones of music, birdsong, wind chimes,
Even Jake brakes reverberating on the hillside,
Sirens warning, smoke alarms beeping.
What would my world be like
If I were deaf and blind?
New worlds would open up, presumably,
I would expand my horizons, my abilities, my perspectives—
Or die of despair in silent darkness.
20 lines, 120 words, free verse.
Prompt: choose a sense and write a poem about it.
