Grandma's Dream
Making herself comfortable on the porch, Anna adjusted the knob and antenna on her transistor radio until her favourite station came on.
It was going to be another hot Saturday, and as the band, Earth, Wind and Fire reminded everyone to join them in Boogie Wonderland, she lay back, closed her eyes, and allowed the sun’s rays to soak into her brown flesh.
The door opened behind her.
She didn’t lift her lashes.
“Good grief, Anna,” came the familiar complaint. “You’re practically in the nude.”
“It’s shorts and a bikini top,” she replied. “All the kids are wearing it.”
“Pfft! In my day, we went to the beach for all that.”
“The beach is miles away, Granny.”
There was a heartbeat of a pause.
“Would you like to go there?”
Anna cracked an eye open; a smile tugging her lips as she watched her dear grandmother, absently running a black comb through the thinning strands of silver curls on her head.
Still clad in her housecoat, Grandma was looking at the house across the street, and yet she wasn’t.
Anna was sure she was already at the beach in this very moment, and familiar with the routine, she rose to her feet to stand beside the older woman.
“The waves look so pretty don’t they, Grandma?”
She watched as her grandma’s lips wobbled, and a tear rolled down her wrinkled cheek. Anna, gently, led her to sit on a chair and as she took the comb from unresisting fingers, she continued with the task of grooming a woman she would gladly spend many summer holidays with.
And maybe, just maybe, she could talk her parents into getting Granny a new residence near the sea instead of being trapped in an antiseptic nursing home far from what she loved the most.
