I Remember
I remember nightly crickets, wakeful mind unyielding,
unlocking secrets within antique tomes by ghostly lantern light.
I remember lazy Sunday afternoons of innumerable Junes,
droning lawnmowers – jake brakes – train whistles – echoes of adventure.
I remember cycling seasons, autumn leaves, snowfall –
intolerable to my bones, long since acclimated to perpetual summer.
I forget what time of year it is – stranded, nay, marooned on a hurricane sandbar…
I remember dreaming out loud on Asheville's misty slopes,
music melding with geography: “all at once so familiar it seems…”
I remember lovable menageries of “huggies” sprawled across my bed:
pugs, huskies, schnauzers, beavers, otters, foxes, in fanciful harmony.
I remember hand-copying beloved poetry into budget notebooks,
collecting, committing to heart, rehearsing at sweet solitary dawn.
I forget lines as adulthood drains – still, poetic essence breathes within my soul.
14 lines, 134 words, free verse.
Prompt: required title and theme: “I Remember.”
Phrase in quotes is interpolated from the OneRepublic title track Dreaming Out Loud.
