Birthing
Prompts day 1: Story to be about a birthday.

She rested on hay piled on the barn floor, breathing hard, her swollen belly pulsing. The farmer and the veterinarian knelt by her.

“It'll be a rough night. The calf is bigger than usual.”

She moaned, long and low. He patted her neck soothingly.

Hours passed. The contractions came. Sharp pains wracked her body. The veterinarian did everything he could. The farmer stayed by her side. Dust floated in the lantern's beam. They waited.

By morning, her calf was born: brown, wrinkled, squealing, hungry. She nursed it with weary patience. Sunlight filtered through the rafters. It was a good day.

Words: 100.
Please note I am not a farmer, and have never witnessed the birth of a calf. This is based solely on my imagination and a story I read many years ago. I apologize for any inaccuracies.

Oh, I am so far behind in giving these out. But what fun the catching up.
