Au Revoir, by OneRepublic
My third choice for the Barrel of Monkeys is OneRepublic's Au Revoir, a deep cut from their 2013 album Native. It has somewhere over 25 million streams on Spotify, which qualifies it for the challenge.
What it Sounds Like
Dreamy and drifting, Au Revoir floats by with synths and strings, crafting a cryptic, moody and mysterious atmosphere with one of 1R’s signature extended instrumental sessions. I'm so used to listening to it on poorer quality earbuds, that it sounds almost uncomfortably loud on my better ones I purchased last summer. If I set the volume one notch lower, it will probably put me to sleep…
What It Means
Lead singer, songwriter and producer Ryan Tedder uses the metaphors of packing away board games to speak of subtle changes in a relationship. His poetic skill makes the song sound like it's about so much more than that, however. Transcendent is a good word to describe what 1R songs are.
“Au revoir” is, of course, the French term for goodbye, farewell, or safe travels. It is never actually spoken in the song, but it is implied that the old life is fading away to be replaced by better versions of oneself and significant others.
Personal Significance
I love Au Revoir! It's one of the cornerstones of my 1R experience, forming pictures in my head and living in my heart even when I hadn't played it in ages. I've made many artworks inspired by it and used it often in my cursive handwriting practice. Sometimes, the most beautiful songs need the least explanation. Enjoy
