The Last Gift

Amelia slumped on the sofa; the last trickles of laughter fading with the close of the front door as the last guests said their good byes.

2.15am – and she was pleasantly exhausted.

The party had turned out great despite her trepidation that only a handful of people would show up.

To be fair, she barely recognized half the folks that had showed up, but what the hell, there had been good food, drinks, the music was awesome, and she must have danced with every single person in the room.

As for the gifts, there were nothing to write home about; though it was the thought that counted, right?

With a yawn, she prepared to rise to her feet when she spied the rather slender gift, wrapped in gold foil, poking out from beneath the sofa.

She couldn’t remember who had brought this one in, but it did have her name scribbled on it – as if in haste.

Curious, she opened it – not really hoping for anything wonderful – only for her breath to catch at the sweet tinkling sound of a familiar childhood song to fill the air.

It was a silver antique music box from the Victorian era, an heirloom inherited from her Grandma that she was sure she’d lost when she moved out of her childhood home at eighteen.

And now, ten years later, it had returned with a simple note attached:

“Thought you might want this back, Sweetie. Happy Birthday, Love Mom and Dad.”
