Sept 12 - Westerns
Prompt: Are your familiar with Hopalong Cassidy? If not, what westerns have you seen or read? Have you tried your hand at writing westerns?
***
Nope. I'm not familiar with Hopalong Cassidy. I may know the name from somewhere - possibly my dad...
I'm not a huge western fan in all honesty. I think it's because it's a very American history/centric topic. Europe was completely different during the same time period... honestly, it's a mind bend to realise while Billy the Kid was causing havoc, the UK was having the first FA Cup (football/soccer) and Wimbledon.
I was always more of a fan of Vikings, Norse and Greek mythology, Dracula, and Frankenstein - very European feeling genres, because those were the things I learnt about in history and English lit as a kid. My national flag has a bloody great big red dragon on it. I grew up hearing Celtic stories of Faires and Bwbachods; Merlin, Morgan Le Fey, and King Arthur. There is a reason I am the way I am and why I tend to gravitate to read and writing fantasy - it's in my blood.
The closest I ever got to a western was Young Guns, and that had more to do with Emilio Estevez and Jon Bon Jovi doing the Soundtrack for Young Guns II. I think I also watched Lonesome Dove at some point because my sister liked it. I have a strong suspicion these are not very good examples of westerns.
I, of course, know who John Wayne is - I haven't been living under a rock. But I was born after the Western rush. I am a huge fan of Firefly... which is pretty much a Western in space.
