A Chaplain's Heart
I find no refuge wherever I try to hide from overwhelming news;
It permeates every corner of my little world, demanding a response.
I stand aghast at horrors wrought by senseless political violence,
Yet admit simultaneously I labeled the victim a jerk and a hater.
Yet also, my overly sensitive soul pushes away flamboyant acquaintances
In the same groups this one human railed against. Does that make me a hater?
Please, Lord, create in me a chaplain's heart.
External flames betray internal weaknesses: I flounder, afraid to offend
By stating truths too bitter for those whose hearts are broken
Or being too anguished over one who spread lies and sowed division.
How do I strike the balance of truth, love, grace, and peace?
How do I love those who creep me out, without being condescending?
How do I stand up for what I believe in, without being hurtful?
Please, Lord, create in me a chaplain's heart.
Chaplains: a quiet, nonjudgmental presence in crisis moments
Setting strong foundations, beginning with building trust like a castle.
Accepting messy emotions, flawed coping skills, myriads of mosaic worldviews
Without personal offense, only offering to accompany through charred valleys.
When trust is gained, so too is respect, and from there, hope blooms
For the broken know they will never walk alone.
Please, Lord, create in me a chaplain's heart.
Words: 230. Free verse.
Prompt ▼
The bop is a new form of poetry introduced by poet Afaa Michael Weaver. It is an argumentative form, like the sonnet, with three stanzas, each with a purpose in the argument.
The first six-line stanza introduces the problem, the second eight-line stanza expands upon it, and the final six-line stanza explains the solution or failed attempts. There is a repeated refrain line after each stanza.
Inspired by recent events both public and personal.
