Prelude to Abyss
After returning home from the Temple of Riazsa, you reunite with Azura who is planning for the incoming assault by Ethelbert and his army. Based on the latest reconnaissance - thanks in considerable part to Big-E’s father Elgin, who came to check on Big-E after not receiving any response to his dozens of messages via Sending Stones - you discover that Ethelbert’s army is seven thousand strong, and is only six days out. Azura asks you to help command her forces, which include five thousand of Kyriel’s own citizenry, plus an additional one thousand from each of the neighboring cities of Calira and Bentan. Thanks to you, the city can also count on Riazsa’s storm giant clan, as well as the bronze dragon Korrigan.
At Harborcrest, you investigate the cause of Bilnan’s and Maza’s feeling of disorientation in the southwest corner of the keep. Big-E uses his divine sense to determine that there’s a fiendish presence somewhere near his room. Reggie throws a hand-axe at the wall in Big-E’s bedroom closet, and then helps Big-E tear a hole in the back wall of the southwest tower before you realize that it’s actually on the outside of your keep. Going out to investigate, you discover a thin extraterrestrial fungus that has stretched over an archway in the stone, and is starting to materialize that space into a portal. You attack the demonic plant and manage to destroy it just before another demon is able to push its way through into your backyard.
In an effort to bolster the defenses around Harborcrest itself, you purchase a pair of stone golems to stand guard outside the front gates of the keep, as well as hire one hundred mercenaries to protect the keep itself and your surrounding property, which you task Ezra with training up and managing. You also have your librarian Rupert research everything he can about demons, especially the type you just defeated at Harborcrest, which can apparently open portals to The Abyss.
With the looming battle ahead, you only have a few more days to prepare for the impending assault.
