Quarrel in the Quarry
Upon arrival at the ruins of Risaan, you’re amazed by both the size of the city, as well as its architecture. While most of the settlements in modern-day Aleria have a standard medieval-era Western European sensibility, this city is very much from a previous era, with classical stone architecture similar to ancient Rome and Greece.

Traveling down the main road which leads directly to the heart of the city, you’re sidetracked by the exploration of a rock quarry from which it looks like much of the city’s more artistic geological assets are sourced. As you explore the mining caverns branching off from the quarry, you’re confronted by a group of thieves who make clear their intentions to rob you after you walk into their little ambush. They have backup from a pair of stone golems, but you have the edge in speed (well, everyone except Tho and Ikaron, anyway) and use it to your advantage.

You make short work out of the thieves, taking out the leader early on. Tho takes the brunt of the damage, first from the two thieves taking pot shots at him as he tries to ascend out of the quarry, then from one of the stone golems that’s nearest to him. Ikaron, who had previously fallen asleep while you explored the quarry, finally shows a glimmer of potential as she finishes off one of the thieves with a sword strike that has a divine smite pumped into it.

Whispersail leaves everyone else to finish off the remaining golem in order to pursue the last remaining thief who fled for his life. Shrouding him in darkness, the rest of you can only imagine the horrors visited upon him by your newest companion, who laughs heartily as the thief screams in agony before finally falling silent. Whispersail rejoins the group and you continue on to the city center, where there now stands an open field where the regent’s castle presumably once stood. Some thorough investigating reveals that, ringing the field and covered over by extensive overgrowth, are the symbols to indicate a teleportation circle.

If the riddle on the back of the map is encouraging you to “begin where the kings of old reigned at the start” ... and if the fortune teller in Orilon is guiding you specifically toward the throne room ... it seems that you’re first going to figure out where an entire missing castle ended up.
