The Evidence
The damning evidence sat between them like a ticking time bomb.

In any other circumstance, they would have known they were sitting on a goldmine—and yet.

“You are going to get in trouble,” Bailey whispered. Beads of sweat dotted his brow like raindrops. “We should destroy it-”

“No way,” Jon replied, shaking his head.

His pinched features were a study in terror and resolve. Even in the supposed safety of their hideout, there was no telling who might be listening.

“If this doesn’t finally get him kicked out of office, I don’t know what will,” Jon said. “It’s clear as day.”

“You know his people will say it’s AI-generated,” Bailey replied, weariness creeping into his voice. “We know what we saw, but his cronies will come for us. We can’t do anything—”

“So what?” Jon snapped. “We ignore it? Let him get away with it?”

“Like he's gotten away with everything else,” Bailey said with a weak smile. “They don’t call him Teflon D. for nothing.”

“Well, he can’t Teflon his way out of this one,” Jon hissed, the device slick in his sweaty grip. “It’s disgusting, Bailey. She’s just a damn ki—ki—kid.”

He slammed his fist on the table, fully aware of what reality held if he followed through.

Bailey was right.

He would be arrested. Disappeared. Sent to some undisclosed location, his name erased after years spent clinging to journalistic integrity.

An integrity already eroding under the weight of corruption and a sickness consuming a country he loved more than one man's delusions of grandeur.

The next day,
The Times received “The Evidence” in an unmarked manila envelope.

It made the headlines, as expected.

Shock and rage simmered.

The gaslighting followed.

The girl was made an enemy.

He was re-elected for a third term.
