Of Genres and Nonsense
Finding a genre that I've never written is a tougher task that it seems; I've intentionally written pieces in a variety of genres with the specific intention of trying my hand at that genre and its conventions. As I write this, I'm actually looking through the WdC genre listings to see what I can find that I haven't written before. I'm not counting all the pseudo-genres (Computers, Environment, Medical, etc.) and trying to limit it to established genres with conventions and tropes.
I've definitely written in most major genres. Action/Adventure, Comedy, Crime, Drama, Family, Fantasy, Horror, Inspirational/Spiritual, Mystery/Thriller, Romance/Erotica, Sci-Fi, Sports, Steampunk, Supernatural, Travel, Western, etc. ... check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check ,check... and check. As I'm looking at the WdC genre listing, the only thing I can think of that I don't recall intentionally writing something for would probably be the Nonsense genre.
I'm the kind of writer who thrives on structure. I like to outline, I like to apply genre conventions and tropes (or try to subvert them), I develop characters and work out narrative pacing. The idea of writing nonsense that intentionally doesn't have any rhyme or reason or underlying objective or motivation is anathema to me. I can appreciate the occasional piece of nonsense writing from someone else, but my brain just doesn't process "nonsense" and "writing" together. It's constantly trying to make sense of what it's reading and writing!
There are definitely genres not featured here on WdC that I would like to see. Cyberpunk (or maybe just Punk more generally) is at the top of my list, because I love those genres and their unique worldbuilding elements. Now that I think about it, most of the genres I'd like to see are subgenres of the fantasy or science fiction genre, because so many of them have unique elements. I'd love to see Alternate History and Weird West personally. Noir would also be an excellent choice. All three of those can be achieved with a combination of existing WdC genres, but they're specific enough in their conventions that having their own genre makes sense. I mean, if we have an entirely separate genres for Pets vs. Animals and Teen vs. Young Adult, and specific genres for Finance, Genealogy, and Occult, it seems like we might add some other niche genres that have specific tropes to them.
Word Count: 423
Prompt: Tell us about one (1) genre that you've never written anything for. Name the genre and tell us why it's not something that has sparked any writing from you. You can find a long list of genres in: Browse by Genre (linked from the left sidebar) to see a list of genres. If there is a genre that you know of, but it's not listed, and you haven't written for it, you can use that too. For instance, there is no listing for Cyberpunk. Create a piece of about 200+ words.
