Higher Calling
One year from now
I will walk the new trails,
feeling the sun on my face and the breeze in my hair.
I will learn the names of things that grow along the paths.
Six months from now
I will begin to wind things down,
and stop accepting other people's urgencies as my own.
I will have one foot out the door.
One month from now
I will wrap up this project, clear my calendar,
and file my last reports that management requires but never reads.
I will make my never-ending to-do list someone else's problem.
A week from now
I will turn in my notice,
and start tuning out my coworkers' drama.
I will extricate myself.
I think about the nature trails,
the smell of something other than
Gary's reheated fish.
I close my laptop.
My phone buzzes.
Dinner tonight?
Jess wants to talk to us about grad school.
*grimacing face*
Boom.
I open my laptop again.
