Night-Rhythms
With a groan (more a moan) of bliss
we hit the bed in unison, meeting in the middle
where our pooch awaits 'bedtime belly rubs'--
tympanic thumps as she sprawls in ecstasy.
Some conversation, a kiss goodnight,
we rotate butt to pup to butt.
Quiet blankets
for a time.
A breeze tempts the wind chimes,
soothing copper harmonies
now ply counterpoint
to my husband's sonorous night lyrics.
Deep asleep
he breathes exactly three times
as fast as I do--still awake.
The pup joins in on the chorus--
her legs run in place across the small of my back
as she chases dream-squirrels;
puppy snores punctuated by soft yips.
The overhead fan, slightly unbalanced,
keeps the beat. We settle in sleep.
My chords unheard.
