Complex Numbers
Complex Numbers
A complex number is expressed in the standard form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i is defined by i^2 = -1 (that is, i is the square root of -1). For example, 3 + 2i is a complex number.
The bi term is often referred to as an imaginary number (though this may be misleading, as it is no more "imaginary" than the symbolic abstractions we know as the "real" numbers). Thus, every complex number has a real part, a, and an imaginary part, bi.
Complex numbers are often represented on a graph known as the "complex plane," where the horizontal axis represents the infinity of real numbers, and the vertical axis represents the infinity of imaginary numbers. Thus, each complex number has a unique representation on the complex plane: some closer to real; others, more imaginary. If a = b, the number is equal parts real and imaginary.
Very simple transformations applied to numbers in the complex plane can lead to fractal structures of enormous intricacy and astonishing beauty.

Having finished NaNo early, I got to hang out without responsibility this weekend. No newsletters to do, no work expected of me... I got some filing done. And what do you call it when you go through old files and shred documents you know you won't need anymore? I call it defiling. I did that. I have a lot more to do. I'm not very organized.
Well, there was one commitment hanging over me for November, which was to submit one story for publication. This I did... tonight, of course, with mere hours to spare before the end of November
I don't remember if I said this, but the last submission got rejected. Oh well.
SO to end the month, I'd like to compare and contrast two links I found today. The first comes from my favorite snark site, Cracked.com, though I found it in Elisa, Snowman Stik 's journal. The author is the same guy who came up with the Monkeysphere concept, which longtime readers might remember. If not, click on the guy's name at the top of the article and look for Monkeysphere on his list of stuff he wrote.

The second article, something of a counterpoint to the first, comes courtesy of Fark.com, and is a Cracked-like "Ten" list - only without the pictures or the gratuitous shots of boobies. It's still an interesting read.

Now go away and leave me alone. |
