Complex Numbers
Complex Numbers
A complex number is expressed in the standard form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i is defined by i^2 = -1 (that is, i is the square root of -1). For example, 3 + 2i is a complex number.
The bi term is often referred to as an imaginary number (though this may be misleading, as it is no more "imaginary" than the symbolic abstractions we know as the "real" numbers). Thus, every complex number has a real part, a, and an imaginary part, bi.
Complex numbers are often represented on a graph known as the "complex plane," where the horizontal axis represents the infinity of real numbers, and the vertical axis represents the infinity of imaginary numbers. Thus, each complex number has a unique representation on the complex plane: some closer to real; others, more imaginary. If a = b, the number is equal parts real and imaginary.
Very simple transformations applied to numbers in the complex plane can lead to fractal structures of enormous intricacy and astonishing beauty.

... but you already knew that.
Specifically, I'm off to the BEACH for a couple days. Kirstin's birthday and all that. I'm not sure what the weather is going to do, but I need a weekend away, even if it rains.
Sunday night we're going to a Meat Loaf concert in DC. I've always wanted to see him in concert. Everyone around me hates Meat Loaf, and they do their best to make me feel like a dork for liking his music. Even my wife was like, "I'm only going because I want to see YOU have a good time. He sucks." (Actually, she's going because I threatened to take another woman.)
But I'm not caving in. Meat Loaf rocks. Oh, sure, he's not Bruce Springsteen, but then again, who is? And if everyone hates him so much, how come Bat Out Of Hell continues to sell 200,000 copies per year, making it one of the best selling albums of all time?
Sure, Steinman lyrics are overblown and melodramatic. My wife loved Phantom of the Opera, so what's the problem here?
The sirens are screaming and the fires are howling
Way down in the valley tonight
Theres a man in the shadows with a gun in his eye
And a blade shining oh so bright
Theres evil in the air and theres thunder in the sky
And a killers on the bloodshot streets
And down in the tunnel where the deadly are rising
Oh I swear I saw a young boy
Down in the gutter
He was starting to foam in the heat
