Blogocentric Formulations
Logocentric (adj). Regarding words and language as a fundamental expression of an external reality (especially applied as a negative term to traditional Western thought by postmodernist critics).
Sometimes I just write whatever I feel like. Other times I respond to prompts, many taken from the following places:

Well, tonight I just passed the 45,000 word mark, and the deadline for NaNoWriMo looms ahead at the end of the weekend. I suppose it's a good thing I'm not going anywhere for Thanksgiving this year (other than a day-trip nearby for the actual holiday tomorrow). Now I have all weekend to crank out the last five thousand words and cross the finish line.
It's been a fun experience, and an educational one. Looking forward to my next blog, in which I will proudly proclaim myself a NaNoWriMo winner and recount my experiences over the past month. |

Well, I think it's pretty safe to say that NaNoWriMo is going well. I've set a lot of personal writing records over the past week... and most importantly, I'm almost halfway to my goal of 50,000 words only a week in!
What I've realized though, is that more than anything, this novel has been good practice. It's not quite going to be the basis for that great novel I was going to send off to publishers. Much like my first screenplay (years and years ago), this is my first foray into the world of long-form fiction writing. I've been loving every minute of it so far, and I can definitely see myself exploring novel writing in the future, but perhaps my first effort at publication should come with a little more preparation than the process of writing with wild abandon that NaNoWriMo seems to encourage.
I guess the point of this blog entry is just to say that I've accepted the fact that my entry this year won't be publishable... that I will definitely be writing another novel in the future... and that the challenge of NaNoWriMo this year had given me the confidence to accept and admit both of those things.
Thanks, NaNoWriMo! Does this mean I have to dedicate my first published work to you? My wife might object to that... |

Well, last night was a pretty historic night. Whether the candidates and ballot measures you voted for won or not, I don't think anybody can deny that this was one of the most exciting elections in recent years. At least from where I stood in line outside my polling place, there was a distinct energy in the air; a welcome relief from the apathy and general discouragement that seemed to permeate the political process in recent years. Particularly in my home state of California (as I'm sure was true in many other states), there was a general feeling that - be it for the presidential race, or a particular ballot measure - that each of our votes counted and that we were casting our vote for what we believed in. It felt like the people were determining policy again, rather than the majority sitting idly by while they few key "battleground" states and districts determined the course of the election.
But now it's time to move forward. Whether you voted for him or not, President-elect Barack Obama will lead this country for the next four years. I only hope that we can all set aside our differences, our partisan politics and our disagreements with one another... so that we can all work toward the dream of a better and brighter America... not as individuals, Democrats, or Republicans... but as Americans. |

Just a quick note for those of you living in the U.S. Please make sure you head out to the voting booth tomorrow and exercise your right to vote. There are a lot of important issues on the ballot this time around (especially in California).
I'm not going to try and pressure you about an issue one way or another... and I'm not even going to use the "this is the most important election of our lives" argument. Every election is important, and you should vote the way you feel is right, without anyone else trying to sway your vote.
We live in a great country; one which trusts its citizens with the responsibility of electing government representatives and influencing policy. Whatever your personal beliefs, please make sure you go out tomorrow, Tuesday, November 4th, and cast your vote. |
