Blogocentric Formulations
Logocentric (adj). Regarding words and language as a fundamental expression of an external reality (especially applied as a negative term to traditional Western thought by postmodernist critics).
Sometimes I just write whatever I feel like. Other times I respond to prompts, many taken from the following places:

Ah, home at last after the holidays. This was a tough year. On the one hand, it was nice because my parents came to visit my wife's family in the Bay Area, and seeing the two families together was a lot of fun. On the other hand, family drama seems to be a given during the holidays, and it was - at times - stressful and awkward. Not to mention the fact that I didn't have internet access and was going through serious withdrawals!
Anyway, good to be home... and very much looking forward to closing out 2010 and ushering in 2011. |

Thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes, kind words, and gifts that you have all lavished upon me for my birthday. In particular, I'd like to thank Brooke for putting together my birthday forum and encouraging everyone to send me reviews and other goodies.
I spent the majority of my birthday working, and it was a particularly long and trying day... so to receive the outpouring of love and support and kindness that I did quite literally made my day.
To all my WdC friends and Brooke especially... thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making my special day actually feel special. I don't know what I'd do without all of you. |

I'm officially calling it. We still have one outstanding donor, but everyone else is paid up. And considering this individual was also a competing writer... and hasn't been online since s/he originally signed up to sponsor and compete (didn't respond to any of the three emails before being disqualified as a writer, or any of the four emails sent to collect)... I'm not holding out too much hope for the 50,000 GP commitment that was made. It sucks to have to cover that cost out of my own coffers, but it's only about 1/20th of the cost I had to eat for prizes and flaky sponsors last year, so I'd consider it a successful event overall.
And since I'm a sucker for useless trivia, if anyone was wondering, the 9.4 million words written by the 84 writers in my activity wrote more collective words than each of the following official NaNo communities:
The cities of Cincinnati and Las Vegas
The whole states of Alaska, Hawaii, and Vermont
The entire countries of Norway, Spain, and Japan
Not to shabby!
And even though we ended up giving away 6,125,000 Gift Points to seven wonderful groups, it still hasn't satiated my holiday spirit. Since I didn't need nearly as my Gift Points this year to cover the losses, I think I'm going to send my minions elves out to visit some good cheer upon a few activities and organizations that weren't featured this year. If you don't know who you are... you will soon!
Happy Holidays, everyone!

It's going to be a long Christmas holiday. Well, long in terms of how it's going to seem... mostly because of how little time I actually have. My new company is open between the week of Christmas and New Years'. I know that a lot of people have to work those days... but my industry doesn't. The vast majority (easily 90%) of all studios, production companies, agencies, management companies, and law firms are closed that week. Which means that even though we have to work, it's not like there's a lot of work to be done if the people you're dealing with aren't in the office to return calls and emails.
Most people at the company are using their time off. The company has a semi-generous vacation policy, so people don't really think twice... it's simply a matter of filling out one of those little vacation forms and that's that. Except for me. Since I just started at the end of October, I haven't accrued any vacation time yet. Which means I have to work. An attorney just started about a week before I did... so it's pretty much going to be me, him, and anyone else unfortunate enough to have blown through their vacation time this year, alone in the office.
Methinks it's going to be very, very quiet... and very, very dull. I can organize the files and entertain myself with minor administrative tasks that I've been meaning to get around to. We're moving offices in February, so it'll be a good time to get some of that prep work out of the way. But honestly, that's not going to take more than a day... which leaves me with three more that week, and a couple others on either side of that week, as people filter out of and back into the office again from their varied vacation schedules.
I think I need to bring a book to work or something. Maybe the new attorney and I can play Scrabble.
I just hope that there's some leniency with the hours for that week. Working those days is bad enough... working my regular 9am-7pm schedule would be even worse. Hopefully there's at least a little wiggle room. 10:00 or 10:30 to 5:00 or 6:00 perhaps?
I guess we'll see!

Wow.
I have to be honest... when I went into running this event for a second year, I was hoping for a modest improvement over what was an incredibly successful inaugural effort. After I crunched all the numbers, I was left staring at the screen, my jaw hanging open. You guys (and gals) didn't just surpass last year's numbers... you flat out blew them out of the water!
Here are some fun facts for the 2010 NaNoWriMo Write-A-Thon:
55 individual Sponsors
84 competing Writers
44 NaNo Winners
And a whopping 9,406,146 collective words written! That's more than four times the number of words written in 2009!
What does all that equate to? Well, that means we raised over 7 Million Gift Points for this year's featured groups! That's more than a 50% increase over last year!
Before I announce the winning teams, I'd also like to take a moment to recognize some of the individual achievements this year:
wakko71 received a Generosity MB for the highest overall sponsorship commitment: 462,311 GPs!
asthanasios received a Determination MB for the highest overall word count: 175,371 words! For such a high word count, Alatheus will also receive 10,000 GPs from kattwoman and 100,000 GPs and a MB from Chantelle Quigley-Dimeo !
Alexia Wynd received a Fundraising MB for sponsoring the most number of Writers: 18!
blainecindy received both a Fundraising MB for having the most number of Sponsors (15) and a Job Well Done MB for raising the highest amount of GPs among all her Sponsors (1,451,336 GPs)!
And now, without any further ado, I present to you the final rankings of the teams! These numbers are final, and factor in everyone's word counts and any modifiers assigned to a team for having fewer members. Your standings are:
1ST PLACE: The Pink Team - 518,051 words
2ND PLACE: The Black Team - 498,399 words
3RD PLACE: The Gold Team - 496,811 words
4TH PLACE: The Green Team - 456,761 words
5TH PLACE: The White Team - 433,489 words
6TH PLACE: The Orange Team - 375,518 words
7TH PLACE: The Brown Team - 365,549 words
8TH PLACE: The Blue Team - 362,597 words
9TH PLACE: The Purple Team - 291,328 words
10TH PLACE: The Yellow Team - 282,202 words
11TH PLACE: The Red Team - 237,642 words
12TH PLACE: The Silver Team - 233,538 words
Congratulations to everyone on a job well done, but in particular to the third-place Gold Team, whose members will each receive an equal share of 400,000 Gift Points, the runner-up Black Team, whose members will each receive an equal share of 600,000 Gift Points... and the victorious Pink Team, whose members will each receive an equal share of our 1,360,000 Gift Point Grand Prize!
I would sincerely like to thank everyone for their support of this years NaNoWriMo Write-A-Thon. Because of all your generosity and hard work, the beneficiary groups will be receiving more than 6 Million Gift Points in charitable contributions this year, which will hopefully allow them to continue their great work on Writing.Com.
The Merit Badges have all been given out... we're still waiting for a few more Sponsors to send in their donations, and I hope to be able to award the Gift Point prizes (and send out the group donations) in the next couple days.
As one last matter, if I could ask all of you to please vote in the following poll, I would really appreciate it. We tried something different with the structure/format of the event this year, and I'm curious to know if you liked this way, last year's way, or want something different for next year. The options are all explained (so you can make an informed vote even if you didn't compete last year), and it won't take more than a couple of minutes of your time. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and will help make this event even better for next year!
Happy Holidays, everyone. Hope to see you next year!

This song is getting pretty popular (you know you've made it when your song is on Dancing With The Stars and Glee), and it always makes me think of my wife. I know, I know... it's cheesy. But I'm a corny kind of a guy, and I love her like crazy.
By the way... cheesy... corny... why are all the synonyms for "lame" and "uncool" named for foods?
"Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars
Oh her eyes, her eyes
Make the stars look like they're not shining
Her hair, her hair
Falls perfectly without her trying
She's so beautiful
And I tell her every day
Yeah I know, I know
When I compliment her
She won't believe me
And it's so, it's so
Sad to think she don't see what I see
But every time she asks me, "Do I look okay?"
I say
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
'Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
'Cause girl you're amazing
Just the way you are
Her lips, her lips
I could kiss them all day if she'd let me
Her laugh, her laugh
She hates but I think it's so sexy
She's so beautiful
And I tell her every day
Oh you know, you know, you know
I'd never ask you to change
If perfect's what you're searching for
Then just stay the same
So don't even bother asking
If you look okay
You know I'll say
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
'Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
'Cause girl you're amazing
Just the way you are
The way you are
The way you are
Girl you're amazing
Just the way you are
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
'Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
'Cause girl you're amazing
Just the way you are |
