Blogocentric Formulations

Logocentric (adj). Regarding words and language as a fundamental expression of an external reality (especially applied as a negative term to traditional Western thought by postmodernist critics).

I miss a restaurant called Sea Salt that used to be in Salt Lake. It was one of the best Italian restaurants I've ever eaten at. The pasta was made fresh every day and the ingredients fresh and mostly locally sourced. Such good food and fantastic service. A rent dispute with the landlord led to its downfall and there really hasn't been a replacement since it closed in 2018.

I love The Martian- Watney is an awesome character. I like all of Andy Weir's books. I'll have to check out the Collapsing Empire series. Lady Kiva sounds fun to read.

Two of my favorite characters are Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files and Jason from He Who Fights With Monsters. There's a line that sticks with me from one of the books- "the building was on fire and it wasn't my fault this time" that seems to perfectly sum up Harry.

And Jason- well, I like his insouciance and use of humor to hide the darkness. For female characters, I love Beth from Yellowstone- she's a trainwreck and an absolute joy to watch and see what she's going to do next. Nanny Ogg from Discworld ranks up there as well.

There was a small sandwich/ pizza shop, I always grabbed either a pizza or subs on my way home from work on Fridays. Everything was always prepared just so and the owner often threw in a big bag of chips. He would ask about my kids by their names when I came in. Once my kids started driving and they would grab our Friday night dinner he would ask if I was okay.
Sadly, the owner passed away suddenly and his son took over the business. The son didn't approach business the same, he raised the prices and never made attempts to know his customers. We stopped going there as did many of his dad's loyal customers. The business survived for about two years before folding.
Unfortunately, the building remained empty for a few years and then was bulldozed to make a parking lot for a bar that came into town.

It's a shame when we lose those special connections with others.

Last trip to Thailand after 7 months: where is Nan and the lady who sold luggage? What happened to the pastry shop? Where's Ben? Where did Joe go (at least Rick told me he moved).

When I come back to the Senior Center in Montana: "who died?".

If you need a summer vacation that's less searing (at least in theory), the Jersey Shore is pretty decent and has plenty of options for keeping the kids entertained. That can help you get a state crossed off your list.

(Note: I'm most familiar with Ocean City and Wildwood and would probably recommend going to Ocean City first. The atmosphere is less crazy and hectic than Wildwood, which might be easier for young kids to deal with. There are still options for rides, mini-golf, and a wide variety of pizza and ice cream/custard.)

Kit - have you ever considered playing D&D online? There are some great communities that run games on VTTs (virtual tabletops) like Roll20 and Foundry, where you can play remotely. The group I'm currently with is all in-person, but my last group used Roll20 when one of our group moved to another state, and it was a really effective way to keep him involved. You can find people running one-off adventures, or entire campaigns.

Yeah, I'm really excited to see what happens in 2026 with all the rule changes. This year should be interesting too with so many changes in driver lineups, but my coworker (who's also into F1) and I have been talking about what's coming in 2026 since last year!

I've always wanted to play Dungeons & Dragons. Sadly, I have never found anyone to play it with - living in a rural area has its disadvantages. I'll just have to stick to reading fantasy novels! I am glad that you found a nice group, though.

I am with you on Formula 1. It's a really interesting sport, and if you enjoy the technical side of things next year should be extra interesting because of all the changes (plus an extra team, it'll be fun to see how that changes the dynamics).

Right now, I am looking forward to seeing how Yuki does in the Red Bull!

— I'm mostly rooting for Hamilton to finally get his record-breaking eighth Driver's Championship (especially after losing it so narrowly in 2021!), although at this point I think I'd be happy with anyone winning who's not named Max Verstappen.

I'm really excited to see what Hamilton and LeClerc can do together at Ferrari this year. On the Constructors' side, other than Ferrari, I'd love to see if McLaren can hold onto the top spot for the second year in a row; although I'm also a fan of the underdogs and I have a soft spot for Haas and Williams.

Prompt #43: Have you ever wanted to be the boss at a place you've worked? What aspects of being a boss are appealing? Do you think you'd actually be good at it?

I actually think I'd be really good at being a boss. I know a lot of people think that they'd be a good boss, but that often comes from a place of wanting the perks of being a boss without an understanding or appreciation of what's actually involved in the job. I've actually been a boss before on a small scale, so I have a bit of an understanding of what's involved. I'm not sure I'd want to be the boss at the place I currently work (leading a massive, publicly-traded company seems like a huge headache

), I'd definitely want to be the boss at some of the smaller places I've worked, where obligations to shareholders or public relations is less of a concern.

There are three aspects of being a boss that I think I do well.

First, I think I'm good at synthesizing information and making informed choices. I'll never be the guy who's a brilliant lawyer, or a finance whiz, or has all of the HR policies memorized... but I do know a little bit about all of those areas, and quite a few others. And I'm confident in my ability to see the bigger picture, so I actually think I would be really good heading up a company where I'm faced with a challenge, given input from Finance, Legal, HR, Operations, etc. and then making the best decision about how to proceed.

Second, I'm a pretty good-natured person who's not afraid of making tough decisions. While I definitely want everyone to like me and while I'm generally well-liked, I also know that not every decision a boss makes is popular, but I think I'm an affable enough personality that I can make difficult decisions while still maintaining support from the company as a whole. I've never had to put that to the test on a large scale (i.e., beyond a few employees here and there), but I have a feeling I'd be able to, for example, find a way to be encouraging and shore up morale even in the face of difficult decisions like layoffs or other austerity measure.

Third, kind of going along with the second one, I've been in the position of the rank-and-file worker for over twenty years now. I've worked at both good and bad companies, and have had both great and terrible bosses myself. I think, if nothing else, I would be able to approach my leadership responsibilities with the perspective of the people who work for me in mind most of the time. One of the biggest issues I see with leadership in a corporate setting these days is a real disconnection from those outside the ranks of leadership, and it would be important to me to maintain a sense of grounded perspective as I made decisions that affect the entire company.

Overall, I think I would be a good boss. At least in terms of managing people and internal decision making. That said, there's a lot of other things that go into being a good leader, including things like vision, execution, crisis management, market positioning, etc. and I suppose I won't really know how I'd do with those things until I get to that bridge and have to cross it.
