About This Author
My name is Joy, and I love to write. Why poetry, here? Because poetry uplifts its writer, and if she is lucky enough, her readers, too. Around us, so many objects abound to write about. Once a poet starts with a smallest, most trivial object, he shall discover that his pen will spill out what is most delicate or most majestic hidden inside him. Since the classics sometimes dealt with lofty subjects with a lofty language, a person with poetry in his soul may incline to emulate that. That is understandable. Poetry does that to a person: it enlarges the soul and gives it wings. Yet, to really soar, a poet needs to take off from the ground. Kiya's gift. I love it!

PROMPT: Complete the following common saying with an ending different than the original line...and then come up with a meaning for it or its origin: "An ounce of prevention is worth _____

===============

An ounce of prevention is worth a thousand rewrites.

If we think about and prepare for what we are going to write, we won’t end up having to edit and revise our work far too many times, otherwise.

I am saying this because I am at heart a pantser. Granted, pantsing is a lot more fun than planning a piece, but at the end of the day, is it worth the amount of time and disappointment in myself when my efforts turn sour?

Much better writers than me usually plan a lot and even write minutely detailed outlines. Given my writing personality, however, I can’t push myself to write such outlines. Yet, knowing the main points of what I’ll write about does help me.

For example, NaNo Prep does train my wild writing spirit, and surprisingly, its questions do not restrict my imagination. Best yet, I can use the prep to fit my needs. This may give me some prevention from having rotten work that is left unfinished or finished with dire results.

I know after some planning, I can still leave some loose ends to fool around with. Even if a rewrite or two will be needed, at least it won’t be in the hundreds or thousands in number, and believe me, I have quite a few things in my port that need a thousand rewrites, not to mention an unfinished novel that needs to be thrown away or redone from the start.

Prompt: Create a list of 13 favorite things in your life in honor Blog City's 1300th day. What makes them special and why?

=============

*Cake2* Happy 1300 Blog City! *CakeB*

1. Writing.com. Let me count the ways. Too many reasons to fit in here.
2. My house. I like a place where I can live, eat, sleep, or work.
3. My new Kindle holder. Small but strong, and can be angled easily.
4. Organic coffee beans. The taste is amazing after ground and made into drip coffee, which I am not supposed to drink but I do.
5. My yoga sandals. Not that I do Yoga but they are the comfiest shoes ever.
6. My small fan by the desk. I feel the heat much earlier than hubby, so this one helps.
7. All my Kindles. Because I can take them with me wherever I go since they fit into my purse.
8. My tiny music players with 16 Gb and 32 Gb memory. I have audio books and some select music in them. I use them while doing housework and other stuff.
9. All my eyeglasses. I couldn’t see, read, write, or live without them.
10. My desk chair. I can adjust it to any height.
11. My laptop stand. I can sit at it or I can stand up while writing or surfing the net when I think I am sitting too much, which I am.
12. Dark chocolate. I like dark chocolate because it is not too sweet and it tastes just right. I’m especially partial to small Dove candies.
13. My two cameras. The somewhat professional one I haven’t mastered yet. The other one I love better because it is the point-and-shoot kind.*Rolling*

Prompt: What is your secret to getting things done, no matter how large or small, such as planting a tree, finishing a novel, cleaning an entire house, learning to sing an entire opera, making a business work, etc.?

==============

This prompt hints at procrastination as a roadblock to getting things done. The difference between people who get things done and those who want to do those things is simple. It is called resistance. From where that resistance comes is a matter for therapists. If we think back really hard, most of us will find that as children we were forced to do things we didn’t want to do at the moment or we were scolded for not doing anything right.

Resistance is a force of nature that is sneaky, too. It shows up in different forms like the anxiety, frustration, distractions, or mind chatter because our minds are so powerful. Truth is, not all of us can face the facts about ourselves even if we were halfway successful in self-therapy.

Instead, for my own use, I came up with a notion. ‘Do it, now!’ I tell myself. If for any reason I can’t do it, I let the project go. It seems to work for me.

I also make a list of things to do and I do them one by one. When a distraction comes up, I go back to my list. Yet, I don’t force myself to do anything that can’t be done if a force outside of me prevents it. I am not going to do gardening, for example, if thunder and lightning suddenly show up.

Another thing that prevents us from doing what we need to do still is the result of our minds’ machinations. The mind makes deterrents irresistible for us as impulses, like surfing the internet or playing computer games (which I am guilty of—Mahjong, hangman…etc.) or even baking a cake.

An idea to such a deterrent is for me to tell that deterrent impulse, “Beat it!” It works, *Wink* some of the time.
