I see. Do you write a character bio? Sometimes giving them a life, even if you don't use all of it, gets you in touch better with your characters. I write practically their life story: how they grew up, did they have both parents in their life, were they adopted, where did they go to school, how far did they go in school, who their friends were and what they were like, did they get into any trouble in school, where did they work, did they like their jobs... the list goes on and on. I don't use most of it, but it gets me into my characters. I also know a little about mental health and how these things affect it and I'm going to school now to get my Bachelors in Psychology. While I don't suggest everyone get that in depth as far as psychological aspects, it's good to know what your character's motivations are.
