Good luck with your new writing endeavors! Short stories are a lot of fun to write; when I was first starting out on this site, I picked shorter weekly or daily contests like the Daily Flash Fiction Challenge, Writer's Cramp, etc., which really helped me get a feel for how to tell a story in a relatively few number of words.

Practice makes perfect!
