Epistolaries (stories written as a series of documents) can be a very effective stylistic choice; Stephen King wrote his first published work, Carrie, as an epistolary. While there is usually more than one document source in this type of writing, single sources work just as well, particularly if the focus is on a single character or protagonist. It's also a great way to break up the monotony if your character is set in a fixed location and there's not a lot of story-driven action going on for an extended period of time.
