06/06: Frog
by A Non-Existent User
"Ooh, froggie!" said Ethel, jumping backwards. "I nearly trodded on you!"

"The word is 'trod', girl," said the frog, in a big deep voice.

"I didn't know frogs could talk," said Ethel.

"This one can."

He was a little green slimy frog, half-hidden in the grass by Ethel's toes.

"And anyway," said the frog, sidling up to Ethel's foot, "I'm not really a frog. I'm Prince."

"Ooh, a prince?"

"Nooo, Prince. Multi-Grammy-award-winning recording artist, actor, songwriter... dreamweaver."

"Well why are you being a frog? I suppose if you've done all that it must be boring being a person."

"Exactly," ribbited Prince. "So I was experimenting with transcendental meditation. And like everything else, I'm too good at it. I got stuck in a frog while roaming the astral plane."

"And now what?" asked Ethel, wrinkling her nose.

"Well... Is your mama home?"

"Yeah, she's doing the washing up."

"Well maybe a kiss'll bring me back."

"Can't I kiss you?" Ethel felt a little let down.

"Naaaw child, I seen what that kinda talk did to Michael Jackson. Only mama can do it."

"Okay," said Ethel. She scooped up the little frog and brought him into the kitchen.

"Mom?"

"Yes dear?" Mom was rinsing a glass.

"This frog says he's Prince."

"A prince? That's nice dear" said Mom, not looking up.

"No, he says he's Prince. He says he's a dreamweaver."

"A dreamweaver now? Well isn't that grand?"

Mom put down the glass, turned, and nearly jumped out of her skin when she saw the frog.

"Ethel, put that back in the garden!"

"But can't you hear him, Mom? He says Ethel's a strange name for a little girl. He only wants a kiss."

"Certainly not! Put it out in the garden!"

"Okay, said Ethel, and carried the frog back onto the grass.

"Wait girl! Don't just drop me here - flip me over the fence into next door's place. Gotta get me a kiss, and I see your neighbour putting out her washing."

"Alright. Bye Mister Prince!"

And with that< Ethel, threw Prince over the fence, neglecting to tell him about next door's cat, who was eyeing him with interest.
