June 6: Frog
by Alyssa Author IconMail Icon
The sun was falling beneath the tips of the pine trees that lined the horizon, indicating that the day was drawing to a close and that it was almost time for supper. Mindy swept her frizzed red hair out of her face, lifting the orange tiny w.atercan to sprinkle her flowers with tiny droplets of water. She listened to the crickets chirp and watched the glow of fireflies in the dimming light.
Croak. Croak. A deep-voiced frog called.
She narrowed her eyes, searching through the cabbages and lettuces for the evening singer. "Hello dear frog." She said, spotting him nearby. He hopped closer to her. Mindy lifted her thin finger to stroke the frog's slimy skin gently. She scooped him up into her hands and lifted him to her face. "Are you a prince?" She whispered.
The frog looked up, nodding. The girl beamed gleefully, taking that as a yes, and puckered her lips up. A shrill scream pierced the air. Mindy's mom slapped the creature out of her daughter's hands. He did a full back-flip, landing on the ground with a thud, before bounding out of sight.
"What were you thinking?" Her mom scolded her, dragging Mindy toward the house. "You get inside and wash your hands now!"
"I'm sorry momma." The child's voice cried. She glanced back into the night before the door swung shut behind her. She thought she saw the glowing of green eyes from the jungle of vegetables in her garden. Then...ever so slightly...did he just wink?
