When Adam first found the old set of cookie cutters, slightly rusted and dusty in his grandmother’s attic, he had to spend 2 days polishing and scrubbing them up before going to work to find the perfect recipe. It wasn't a whole month before he found out that the first firing only set the initial shape, it was the warmth of the sun that really brought them to life. And then only by accident. He just happened to be taking tea in the garden when that little half-eaten creature started to twitch. The skin of the gingerbread began to crack and the tiniest paw emerged. Carefully Adam removed each batch from the oven, laid the gingerbread creatures in rows out in his garden, and began the wait for the right angle of the sun. Only some would receive just the right amount of sun's rays. Adam opened his newspaper listening for the pop of cookie crumbling, the squeak of a creature emerging. With only a few hours of sunlight, finally two of them began to emerge - a girl and a frog - tiny golems gasping for air. Slowly Adam poured a bit of tea over them. They grew until they were life-size. The girl with her perfect ginger ringlets hovered over the frog, mumbling that strange golem language. He could see the notch in her ear where he had nibbled the cookie, unable to help himself. He was almost sad that she would have but days before she crumbled away into sweet tasting dust. |
