Little Maisie was a curious child. She liked to ask questions about everything. Some people thought she should learn to be quiet and more like other children her age but 4-year old Maisie kept asking questions. She liked to look through draws and boxes to see what she could find. Sometimes she found a real gem, like a pretty necklace or an old photo. Sometimes all she found were spiders and cobwebs. None of this bothered her though, she just kept looking to see what else she could fine.

Getting out of bed one morning, Maisie decided today was the day she was going to find a fairy. Not just any fairy, but one that would take her on an adventure. So Maisie put on some old clothes, children should not be playing outside in good clothes, and headed down to see what she could find. Picking up her pretty little watering-can with the it’s flower on the side, Maisie carefully filled it with water so she could give the plants a drink. Maisie knew each of them by name. There was the tall straight Daffodil, standing at attention, the prickly Rose waiting for someone unsuspecting to prick their finger on a thorn and the pretty little Pansies all bunched together like little women at a tea-party.

Out of nowhere, Maisie heard a croak. Looking down she saw the ugliest little toad looking back up at her. Dropping her watering can, Maisie looked down at him in shock. She was a little nervous at first but then thought what a wonderful treasure this would be. Bending down ever so carefully, Maisie reached out to grab him gently. Picking him up, Maisie thought, “He is so soft and a little damp.”
She could feel his heartbeat so close to his skin, going bump, bump, bump ever so quickly.

“Croak,” went the little frog. Maisie almost dropped him.

“No, little frog, you are not getting away, I am going to take you inside and you can be my pet.”

“Croak,” The frog almost screamed in her hands.

Maisie felt like it was trying to tell her something. She couldn’t understand it though. Taking the frog inside, Maisie put it in a little box, then went back outside to get it some grass to make a bed.
