“It's not fair!” Tommy said, his bottom lip curled and his foot stamped, but to no avail. “You don't reach the skeleton's hand, darling. Maybe we can come back next year, after you've grown a bit.” “What if I stand like this?” he stood on the very tippiest of toes, straining up, trying to get his head to the line. “I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do. Maybe we should go to the merry-go-round, you liked it last time.” “I'm bored of the merry-go-round,” Tommy proclaimed, “I want to go on this one, it's not fair!” “How about some lunch, you'd like a burger, wouldn't you?” “Mmm,” there was no doubting that a burger sounded good, but he didn't want to give up yet. “How about...” he murmured under his breath, trying to push his hair up straight, and keep it there. “My you need a hair cut, don't you!” Was the only outcome however, as he remained several inches short of his goal. “Mum, I want to go on it too!” “Oh but Joey, you don't want to make your little brother jealous, do you?” It was clear though, that Joey had no qualms about Tommy's jealousy and preceded to enter the queue. “Joey! Oh dear, well I suppose we have to stay here now. Honestly, what will I do with you two?” Tommy stood, ignoring his mother's words, staring instead at the queue his brother had disappeared down, his bottom lip curling again. “Oh look there he is!” Tommy looked up at where she was pointing, Joey was seated at the front of the train, excitement and anticipation all across his face. “It's not fair! Why do we have to watch him have fun?” “Well now we can hardly leave him, can we?” “Why not?!” But he got no response, as the train whirred into life and began chugging down the rails. They were thick wooden planks which seemed, to Tommy at least, to stretch on forever. Picking up speed however, the train soon moved into murky shadows and out of sight. They could heard the screams and cackles of the sound effects and the riders' shouts of fear from where they stood. Tommy couldn't help but shy into his mother's leg, holding it tight. |
