I can see why Jane Austen first called her book , First Impressions. Darcy's first impression of Elizabeth is that she is the daugher of a woman who is desperate to have her daughters married off. This is a true impression, but it isn't the whole story. Because of his negative impression of her mother, he doesn't see her beauty. It is only later, when he sees how she handles his own insult that he sees her beauty and wit. I think when he sees her and falls for her, her mother isn't around at that moment. So, it is first impressions of the mother that cloud the picture for Darcy. Then, with Elizabeth, she sees a snotty fellow, who thinks he is better than the provincial company he sees. This, also, is true, but there is more to Darcy than meets the eye. In their second meeting, his passion is on display as he stares at Elizabeth, but she is so blinded b y the first meeting that she doesn't see him or the fact that there is more to him. Then, there are first impressions where Wickham is concerned. Everyone has an impression of him on first meeting that is completely wrong. At least with Darcy and Elizabeth, there is some truth to the first impressions, but with Wickham he is the total opposite of what he attempts to portray with his manner and looks. That is what I think. |
