Oooh, not a tragedy, but whatever you said sparked an idea!

The protagonist is stealing magical items and replacing them with fakes. I think the first one will go off without a hitch, but the second one, the person she steals from is able to recognize the fake and accuses her and her two not-yet-allies come to her defense when the rest of the group is ready to condemn her. She could be caught outside the person's room and think she got away with it, then be dragged in to be accused the next day.

(Had to write it out here, because I'm literally out the door to work and don't want to forget)
