Funnily enough, the soldier who killed him actually did screw up. They were under orders not to kill him, but the soldier who came across him evidently didn't realize that the old dude doing math in a random house was Archimedes.

Or, of course, he knew exactly who Archimedes was and disobeyed orders on purpose...
