Speaking of writing snatches of conversations during prep; I find having the characters converse with one another is a great way to draw out their personalities etc. It's a great way to illustrate a) each character's attitude to a problem or another character, b) each character's strengths and weaknesses plus their hang-ups and c) each point of view character's want or need in a scene and the conflict surrounding it.
