Oh, and concerning Italian food... I love it, as I love German food. All will be amply accounted for in the story.

By the way: German food like bread, beer (=liquid bread), etc. you probably also get at a European deli, international supermarket or liquor store. We have a small store round the corner that supplies UK food & beverages, so probably you get lucky with a quick google session on German food stocks near Plymouth.
