I have returned and am almost late but wanted to get this out for you all, or for those that haven't gotten ahead of the calendar. This is a different day. Some will find it super easy, others might be unsure what to put. That is okay. Let's talk about the options. Assignment: (1) Create a list of definitions (see below) in a format easy to edit and expand. (2) Optional: Brainstorm and describe an object critical to the plot. Add to definitions list. Definitions are a good way to get to know something. I don't know about how school went for you, but I remember in high school and younger, when we started on a subject, often the first thing we would do is learn definitions for certain words involved in the topic. This assignment can sort of be like that. Definitions help understand what things are or how we convey the words in our world. This can come in handy for fantasy and science fiction based stories because there are new things, different places and aspects of the world to explain. If you know those details, it will help because in the writing, there might be an occasional time where you will need to know what a thing is for that to work in the story. Remember the ice berg too. You will need to know way more than whatever ends up on the page in November and beyond. And it doesn't have to be made up words or physical items. For example: I have a series that involves both a detective and a witch. There is an organization of witches or magic wielders that oversees many different sections. Right now, I have it listed as the High Council but that may change. The High Council is one of the things I "explained" as my definition for the assignment. It can be explaining something important in the world of your story and why it's useful or the purpose of something in the story. That works for the definitions too. And if you don't want to do that, no worries. Do (2) as it's something that used to be a regular assignment. Describe an object that is critical to the plot. This doesn't mean you have to write a story where it's something epic like a ring that needs to be destroyed that is the center of the entire book/series. The plot point can be minor more major. The point is to find an object and think about the details. Which might be the theme here. Have a particular focus and think about some details. They will help when writing the chapter because you can look at the whole picture of the novel, but that can be overwhelming. Instead, focus on one moment at a time, one item and one scene. Then you will be able to move from there. I picked a dagger to describe. It isn't a big deal in the plot but it sets things up because the witch that goes missing bought it from the MC witch's store and he notices that the blade is out of place at the scene. Consider a scene. Pick the item to picture in your head, then write out the details. Have fun even if this is on a Monday. If you read my ramble, I hope it helped. ![]() |
