https://blog.prepscholar.com/list-of-literary-devices-techniques https://writers.com/common-literary-devices https://youtu.be/YEAyrJJ1GPI Literary Devices aren't necessarily the first thing we think of when we start writing. Maybe you learned onomatopoeia in school because your teacher wanted you to use it for the poetic sound. It could be Poe's use of specific sounds for the depressing mood in the House of Usher. It might be Chekov's gun, where if you have a gun on the mantle at the beginning, it needs to go off by the end of the story. These are the building blocks that polish your story. Maybe you look at a few of them that are important to your vision of this novel. I always look at juxtaposition but I'm not sure I've successfully used it in a novel. Yet. The next one might be the one! I find looking at the lists - and there are many more than the few I linked - broadens my view of what my novel could be, whether I actually use them or not. So enjoy the day of looking at the possibilities, the roads that could be taken to make your novel into something more. Good luck!! ![]() |
