I don't remember what it was like when I lived in Germany, but when I first moved to England, I learned the custom of 'next out of the box'. Everyone bought cheap boxes of, like, 50 cards, and then handed them out to everyone they knew, without any thought, just literally the next card out of the box. For most cards, especially the ones you would hand deliver, like the ones for work colleagues and neighbours, you would write three words: The recipient's name on the envelope and at the top of the card, and your name at the bottom. For family members, you might buy a more expensive box with nicer cards, or individual cards that said 'Mum & Dad' or whatever, but the message was still mostly pre-written and you didn't have to put much thought into it. I joined in this custom for years because it was just done that way, until there was a drive not to kill half the rainforest every year. I switched to giving nice, personalised cards to two people, my children. Everyone else got a thank you for the card they gave me. I made a donation to a charity close to my heart instead, so it's costing me more money than before, but I feel a bit more environmentally responsible and I'm saving myself a lot of time. Not to mention the fact that the 'next card out of the box' is meaningless anyway. These days, no one I know does cards. We're not in the office enough to pass them around, and the new neighbours that have moved in over the years never bothered. So it's just two cards for me, because my kids still insist. |
