Riri Gast peered over a mug of forgotten ale, watching the dark silhouette survey her mother's prosperous inn from the door. Although a noonday sun obscured the stranger's features, she felt his eyes on her- and her alone. Habit forced her right hand to massage the stump its counterpoint once resided. Stress always flared the pain of the old war wound. The din of the crowded proprietorship eased to an uncomfortable silence as the slim visage strode down the steps to the sunken dining room, the soft slinking of metallic armor singing in its wake.
1465736 | Symbol of the Order Genres: Action/Adventure - Drama - Fantasy by L. D. Dailey |
Sitting in front of a sacked mosque, the watcher strained weary eyes against the rising sun obscuring the Temple of Solomon. A new day in the Holy Land did little to stave off the chill. The beggar-in-disguise pressed his rags, newly acquired from a deceased contributor, tighter around his slim frame. The Byzantine cursed the name of Emperor Alexius, even while serving the man as his spymaster. "Jerusalem, the Kingdom of Heaven." A cynical snort answered his own mutters, "Nothing here but a den of thieves, murderers, and rapists. These fools pose no threat to the empire, just Christian wolves killing Muslim dogs, the whole lot of them."
1325297 | A Wasted Life Genres: Crime/Gangster - Detective - Drama by L. D. Dailey |
Glancing at his cheap watch, the detective sighed at the digital readout of two hours past midnight. Jesus, Mary and the f------ goat. He uttered a weary sigh while patting the slight budge above his waist. To hell with the paperwork, and to hell with the captain. The officer shook his head, unable to fathom the new captain's obsession with reports. "Twelve arrests in one night and she'll still chew my ass for not dotting the I's." Sharp pain from an old hip-pointer caused him to grimace while rising and walking away. "I'm too old for this."
1411792 | Pitfalls and Snares Genres: Political - Drama - Fantasy by L. D. Dailey |
His latest retinue of courtesans cooled the self-proclaimed Emperor of the Seven Tribes with fans of bamboo as he examined reports assuring his imminent victory over the ebony-skinned spearmen of Thri, proclaiming him Emperor of the Eight Tribes.
The moniker caused a smile to crease his face, lasting until he unfurled the next papyrus scroll. Hands, calloused from swordsmanship training, shook with intemperate rage as he studied the details of the rebellious cult expanding its following back in his homeland. Sweat began to bead across his furrowed brow as he imagined field after golden field of wheat decimated at the hands of the fanatics, halting his infantry machine with their "purging of the unclean." Words detailing a diminutive man of noble birth leading the rabble caused him to pause in deep thought. Unshed tears filled his eyes as the report detailed the number of ravished women, the hundreds of men sacrificed to mythical gods, and the orphaned children brainwashed into new converts bearing the brand of one serpent feasting on another.
1424429 | The Fall From Grace: Chapters 1 ~ 5 Genres: Drama - Fantasy - Action/Adventure by L. D. Dailey |
The slim man paced across the bejeweled carpet, striving for calm with deep breaths. How long does it take to give birth? Long, delicate fingers cupped a chiseled jaw as the robed figure contemplated the fruition of his dreams. Thoughts drifted to his youngest wife and the wise investment he undertook upon agreeing to marry the simple merchant's daughter. He thanked his god for the blessings bestowed upon his house. Anurra, please bless me with a son. I only require one.
1456896 | The March Toward Oblivion Genres: Fantasy - Drama - Action/Adventure by L. D. Dailey |
A vortex of nothingness, tall and wide as a man, swirled and raged before the fallen knight. The murky depths swallowed sands from the surrounding desert as if famished, inhaled the air about it like some living being, and fought against the oppressive forces of nature working to suppress it. The man, clad in ebony garments of silk, forced the thoughts giving this- this thing he summoned a life of its own out of his troubled mind. The dark musings did little to stifle his growing apprehension.
1444821 | One Doom for Another Genres: Drama - Fantasy - Action/Adventure by L. D. Dailey |
The bodyguard surveyed the foreigner entering the Great Hall through massive gilded doors without the pomp or pageantry accompanying most dignitaries. The figure, concealed head to toe by a voluminous gown of ebony silk, marched with an unnerving sense of purpose possessing neither haste nor procrastination. A brave one, the King's Sword thought as the lonely procession traversed the lines of steel encased knights lining the rectangular room.
1411421 | The Prophetess Genres: Drama - Fantasy - Gothic by L. D. Dailey |
The young missionary sat on the wooden floor of her hovel with crossed legs and a teacup filled with crimson tea hovered beneath her lips. A flash of lightning from the starless sky accompanied a crash from the shanty's lone door, producing a momentary fracture of her icy visage- but only a moment. A sip of chilled tea calmed her nerves as the massive guest arrived with his face obscured in the shadow of the slamming door.
1372447 | Secrets Of The Mind Genres: Thriller/Suspense - Drama - Sci-fi by L. D. Dailey |
The young woman glanced up at the large analog clock above the train station's exit. A mirthful expression creased her features. How cliché, the giant clock, just like in the movies. The minute hand shifted to thirty-eight minutes past. I've got one hour. Manicured hands ruffled through the burgundy handbag matching her dress suit. The tourist extracted a map that had seen better days. Only three blocks. She hurried past the cabbies on patrol, resolving to walk off the cheeseburger and fries she indulged herself with for lunch.
1371023 | Obsessions Genres: Fantasy - Drama - Sci-fi by L. D. Dailey |
Tears filled his azure eyes as the adolescent turned his back to his master. "I have to see her." A soft hand pulled the wooden door open. Another fit of coughing from behind gave him pause. The boy wanted to face the man he loved as a father, yet his love for a woman proved stronger. He stepped out of the workshop, his leather bound boot silent atop the stone walkway.

He gave a practiced swat at his new companion with his wide-brimmed Akubra. The agitated walker soon learned to ignore the lone fly and focus on the task. She's late. The perspiring man paused and mopped up accumulated sweat along his brow with a handkerchief from the left pocket of the comfortable Levi's before slamming the worn canvas hat back on his head, pulling it tight atop his graying ebony hair. The stranger pushed his mahogany horn-rimmed glasses up along his hooknose. An expert twist of a slim wrist pushed the sleeve of his denim jacket up. The clear image of a clean-shaven, angular face and dull azure eyes gazed back at him as he checked his only true possession. Five minutes. Maybe. Give or take a minute. He brought his left hand down to his side as shook his right, checking the weight of his vinyl attaché. Feeling that the contents were all there, he pressed on along the beaten gravel road.
1320784 | A Matter of Life and Death Genres: Fantasy - Gothic - Occult by L. D. Dailey |
Bellemarr knew that she was awake, but he did not react. He simply kept his eyes closed and waited. He regulated his breathing and heartbeat to a steady rhythm as he fell into the familiar trance. Perhaps tonight she would decide. Miittann quickly sat up in the elaborate bed they shared. Without making a sound, she exited the room. Bellemarr sighed. Perhaps tomorrow she would decide.
1331387 | An Oath Sworn Genres: Fantasy - Action/Adventure - Gothic by L. D. Dailey |
Bellemarr coated his blade with the clear ooze he ordered Delen to save for him. He did this task automatically, without thought, his body simply going through a normal routine he had performed many times before. His mind floated in emptiness. He did not brood about his strategy. He did not contemplate the coming battle. He could barely hear the words of his new bride...

She could not help but admire the walls of the long, narrow hallway. She admired the herringbone design of the masonry, the way the edges of each stone formed a pattern when compared to the adjacent stones. Pilasters were placed at exact intervals carved in the wall. In between the support columns, drapes depicting scenes of life hung.
1323094 | The Fall of an Empire Genres: Fantasy - Action/Adventure - War by L. D. Dailey |
There is something wrong here,I can feel it. Aulus Vot. Canus mused as he scratched his long dark hair in thought.
"What was that, thief?" Knight Lord Marcius inquired. His handsome features, the chiseled face, dark hair, and green eyes, were marred only by the scar along his scalp. The Dark Knight gave him that scar only two years ago.
"Leave him be, Marcius," Knight Commander Marrinae ordered with a hint of exasperation in her tone. Marrinae, the self proclaimed Avatar of the true God, sat primly in her wooden chair, legs crossed, hands clasped together in her lap. She did not seem worried about the odds. She seemed ready.
1323900 | A Final Lesson Genres: Fantasy - Action/Adventure - War by L. D. Dailey |
"Another shipment of food and supplies will arrive from Asnium soon," The God King said more to himself than to the guard on duty. He placed the report on the ground beside him. "Although not enough to feed two thousand ogres, one hundred trolls, and seven thousand men, I'm afraid." He then looked up at the guard. "And what do you think of this fact, Rmuk?" The God King asked in the language of the ogres.
The ogre guard shrugged, his scale mail armor creaked in protest. "Trolls eat everything. None will be left for ogres." He hoped that the God King would be pleased with his response.
The God King sighed, "You recognize the problem, old friend. But you need to try harder to find a solution. A general must be prepared for every eventuality, Rmuk. Being a general is more than being the strongest and smartest among your men. I hope you understand that fact soon. I have big plans for you." The God King resumed his chore of reading reports.
1340488 | The Gods' Game Genres: Fantasy - Action/Adventure - Drama by L. D. Dailey |
The ebony garbed warrior could no longer gaze upon the snow covered peaks as the reflection from the morning sun engulfed the mountain pass within a halo of light. A family of rare blue birds greeted the dawn with a chorus of high notes. The screech of a lone eagle challenged the song. The display of peace struck the emperor as ironic. The calm before the storm.
