First Impressions:
A very moving story. What came across very well was the love the younger sister felt for her nephew. As much as she protested and blamed her older sister, she put her life on hold without as much as a second thought. Things like friends, boys and proms became unimportant compared to looking after the baby, and even her school work took second place. She proved to be far more mature and reliable than the little boy’s mother, who seemed to have gone off the rails at a young age. To be fair, the older sister also found herself in the role of the mother quite unexpectedly when their parents died, and it seems that she couldn’t handle the responsibility - not that that kind of load should be put on anyone’s shoulders, but sometimes life happens. The narrator found this out as well, but although she was at the same age or perhaps even younger than her sister, she did far better.
Suggestions:
The story was well written; I didn’t notice any technical errors and I don’t have any other suggestions.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, this was a touching and quietly powerful piece, and it left me genuinely invested in both the narrator and the baby. It balanced frustration, grief and reluctant love in a way that felt believable without ever tipping into melodrama. By the end, I was left with the sense that this girl, despite everything stacked against her, had already grown into someone stronger and kinder than she realised. A great read!
