Oak Island, North Carolina
Oak Island, NC has been dubbed "North Carolina's Best Kept Secret" for many years. The real estate and tourist industry used this slogan to describe the pristine beaches of this phenomenal place. The island was developed in the 1950's and included three townships; Long Beach, Yaupon Beach and Caswell Beach and was on a barrier island known as Oak Island. In 1999, the towns of Long Beach and Yaupon Beach consolidated and became the Town of Oak Island.

Caswell Beach is home to the Oak Island Lighthouse and the Oak Island Coast Guard Station. To reach this awesome place, there is one bridge leading on and off the island. In recent years, this has become a safety hazard to many because of the traffic and population increase and the ever present threat of a hurricane reaching the NC coast.

Oak Island is situated in Brunswick County, one of the fastest growing counties in the US. We are located between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC. On one side is the calm Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway which runs from Maine to Miami; the other side, the indescribable Atlantic Ocean. In 2001, you could purchase a single family residential lot for about $10,000 to $20,000. In just a few short years, the price of real estate has skyrocketed that cost to nearly $200,000.

Brunswick County has recently gone through a tax re-evaluation and the property values have risen 218% in four years. The tax rate still remains relatively low compared to other parts of the country. The town manager has recommended a tax rate of 12.45 cents per $100 in value for the 2006-2007 fiscal year.

In addition to the normal sunbathing and beach activities, there are a few things to keep you occupied should you decide to visit our fine town on vacation. We have two golf courses, several putt putt ranges, Oak Island Lighthouse, numerous fine restaurants serving all types of food and at any given time, a cold beverage can be found.

So, if you are ever in the neighborhood, please stop by. You would have to be headed in our direction because we are quite hidden. You can't pass by our lovely town on your way to anywhere. You have to consciously make that turn to visit "North Carolina's Best Kept Secret", the place that I call home.
