The Red Wheelbarrow
|
When it rains and I am sad I usually think of this poem which is so striking in it's simplicity.
The Red Wheelbarrow
by William Carlos Williams
so much depends
upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chickens.
It is said that William Carlos Williams was describing a scene outside the window of a house in Passaic, New Jersey where he was attending to one of his patients, a very sick young girl. I wonder how he felt that day with a young girl's life in his hands. To me the poem seems to have a sense of hopelessness about it. What do you think?
