	 Outrunning the Blues
“One of these days, I’m getting out of here,” she said, still in bed while I put on my clothes.

“Yeah?”

“To England. Maybe Spain. Somewhere I can be somebody new.”

“Wherever I’ve gone, the blues are all the same.”

“Well, I’m leaving it all behind for real. Just as soon as I save up enough.”

I counted off several bills, thought about it, and counted off several more.

“That’s too much.”

“Not if it gets you the life you want.”

I set the money on the nightstand and left, hoping that she’d find a way to outrun the blues.
