The Last Straw Robert Logan met Clara in college, and by the time they married two years later, he believed their love was unshakable. But things changed.
Late nights at work turned into unanswered calls. Her laughter faded. She guarded her phone like it held state secrets. Robert gave her space; until she didn’t come home one night.
The next morning, he stayed home from work, sitting stiffly on the couch, staring at the front door.
At 7:43 AM, it opened.
Clara stepped inside, her makeup smudged, clothes wrinkled, shoes in her hand as though that would somehow muffle her entrance. Her eyes widened when she saw him.
Robert didn’t stand. His voice came out low, calm, controlled in a way that frightened even him.
“Where were you last night?”
She froze. He could see the truth blooming in her silence; slow, vivid, undeniable.
“I-It isn’t what you think,” she stammered, eyes flicking to the floor.
“Then tell me,” he said.
Silence stretched between them like a canyon. She opened her mouth, closed it.
Tried again.
“I stayed with someone...from work.”
He stood then. The answer hit harder than he expected, even though part of him had suspected it for weeks.
“You could’ve told me,” he said. “You should have told me.”
“I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“You did anyway.”
She opened her mouth, searching for something to fix it, but nothing came.
Robert didn’t yell. He didn’t throw anything or storm out.
“I think you should go,” he said.
Her breath caught. “Robert...”
“Not forever,” he added. “But right now, I need space to figure out what’s left of us.”
She nodded, quietly walked out.
And Robert sat back down. The house was still, empty, but for the first time in a long while, he could breathe.
